Pour mettre en scène ce bal de fin d'année, qui tient tout autant de la célébration joyeuse et triviale que de l'inquiétant rituel macabre, Andrew Kavanagh s’est-il inspiré de son expérience personnelle ? At the formal a en effet été produit par son école, le Victorian College of Arts, et nul doute qu’Andrew a dû être un élève studieux. Tournant presque entièrement en un seul plan et utilisant brillamment les effets sonores et le ralenti pour créer une ambiance oppressante, il laisse sa caméra glisser d’un protagoniste à un autre pour mieux observer le groupe. Ce soin apporté à la forme est tout sauf vain, et s’il nous plonge dans la confusion en faisant se télescoper le moderne et l’ancien, le civilisé et le barbare, le profane et le sacré, c’est pour mieux nous interroger sur qui nous sommes. At the formal est une spirale intense, dégageant une énergie brute qui nous frappe de plein fouet.

Was Andrew Kavanagh inspired by his own experience when he staged this prom night -- both a trivial joyful celebration and a macabre ritual? In fact, his college, the Victorian College of Arts, produced At the Formal. Andrew has been a hard-working student, no doubt. The film is composed of almost one single shot. Sounds and slow motion are used brilliantly to create an oppressive atmosphere. Kavanagh’s camera flows from one protagonist to another to observe the group closely. The care given to the form of the film is not a vain exercise. Confusion settles as dualities collide --  the modern and the ancient, the civilized and the barbaric, the sacred and the profane -- and we eventually interrogate who we are. At the Formal is an intense spiral, exuding a raw energy that hits us head on.
